Texas basketball faced a formidable challenge at the Moody Center on January 29th, hosting the No. 4 Houston Cougars. Despite a valiant effort, the Longhorns’ second-half resurgence wasn’t enough to overcome the Cougars, who clinched a 76-72 victory in overtime.
From the onset, Houston asserted dominance, securing a double-digit lead at various points in the first half and entering halftime with a comfortable 33-25 advantage. However, Texas, led by head coach Rodney Terry, staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, narrowing the gap with a 40-32 surge.
Sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell emerged as a key Longhorn player, contributing 12 of his 16 points in the second half. Senior guard Max Abmas and senior big man Dylan Disu also played pivotal roles, igniting the offense with crucial baskets.
Despite the Longhorns’ resurgence, their efforts were hindered by Houston’s prowess on the boards. Outrebounded by a significant margin, particularly on the offensive end, Texas struggled to contain Houston’s aggressive rebounding strategy.
The defeat marked Texas’ third consecutive loss in the Big 12, highlighting their vulnerability on home turf. They now hold a 1-3 record in conference games. With aspirations for a strong NCAA Tournament resume, Texas must win four out of their final five home games to salvage their conference record.
The matchup against Houston presented an opportunity for Texas to secure a statement victory but ultimately underscored their challenges in a competitive conference. As they prepare for upcoming fixtures against ranked opponents, including a daunting road game against the No. 25 TCU Horned Frogs, Texas must regroup and recalibrate their strategies to navigate the rigorous conference schedule ahead.
